The Gondolo is probably the earliest example of a horological nickname that stuck. Today's "Pepsi", "Batman" and "Kermit" watches are all a good 100 years behind the curve – Gondolo was being used as early as 1905, derived from the long relationship between Patek Philippe and the Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau, with whom they'd worked since 1872. At one time the superstar jeweller was responsible for a full third of Patek Philippe's entire worldwide sales!
