Cosmograph Daytona
16520 - Zenith Cal. 4030
About this watch
UK retailed at Ernest Jones in July 1997, this is a perfect example of Rolex's first automatic Daytona, the Zenith El Primero based ref. 16520 Cosmograph, accompanied by its Rolex box & certificate.
The importance the ref. 16520 holds in the history of the Rolex Daytona cannot be overstated, it was after all the first Cosmograph to feature both a sapphire crystal glass, and a self-winding chronograph movement. Personally I love the aesthetic too, the crisp white dial with contrasting black chrono registers (reintroduced on the latest Cerachrom ref. 126500), with red DAYTONA at six.
This T serial Cosmograph manufactured in 1996/97 would have been one of the final 16520's to feature a white tritium dial, before Rolex switched to Luminova luminous for the hands & batons in 1998. During a Rolex service in 2014, the polished centre link Oyster bracelet was upgraded to the sturdier 78390 'solid end link' version, so one can wear with confidence. Waterproof to 100m.
