What makes the yellow gold reference 16808 so special?

Launched in 1979 (along with with the steel 16800) it was the first gold Submariner to feature a sapphire crystal glass, and quick-set date (thanks to the updated calibre 3035 movement), and the depth rating increased to 300m up from 200m on the previous 1680. Known as a 'transitional' Submariner because despite all the technical advances, it still retained the matte black (tritium) nipple dial with gorgeous gold font from the earlier 1680/8 model.
