Production of the GMT Master ref. 16700 began in 1989, it replaced the Plexiglas '16750'. It was the first GMT Master to feature a scratchproof sapphire crystal glass, and the automatic dual time calibre was upgraded to the 3175.

The red of the original bold serifed Pepsi bezel has aged beautifully, giving it the extremely desirable 'pink lady' appearance. The white gold hour markers & Mercedes hands, are infilled with tritium lume, and the red 24hr GMT hand allows two time-zones to be read at a glance. Fitted to its correct year stamped "78790" all brushed Oyster Fliplock bracelet, powered by Rolex's self-winding calibre 3175, and waterproof to 100m. Accompanied complete with its green Rolex box, GMT Master Cockpit booklet & Rolex international warranty dated Sept 1997.
